What is a silver round?

A silver round is a coin shaped silver piece that has been minted privately. This means that it is not backed by any government body, and has no legal tender value. A one ounce silver round differs from a one ounce silver coin, because a one ounce silver round is produce by a private mint, whereas a silver coin is produced by a government mint. However, silver rounds usually have lower minting costs than silver coins, and therefore investors may purchase them at a significantly reduced premium compared to that of a silver coin.  For clients who are interested in buying silver based on price, silver rounds may be preferable to silver coins.

Most private mints will issue their own silver rounds, and these are particularly popular in the United states. A number of well-known mints, such as Asahi and Argor-Heraeus, have issued their own silver rounds for retail investors. Other famous silver rounds include the American Buffalo silver round, and the silver St. Gauden round, which are both minted in the United States. The designs on these coins may vary slightly depending on what mint the coins originate from.

Some popular brands include:

  • 1 Ounce Heroes Silver Round
  • 1 Ounce Asahi Silver Round
  • 1 Ounce American Buffalo Silver Round
  • 1 Ounce American St. Gauden Silver Round

In some instances silver coins may be preferable to rounds. For example, silver Britannia coins are exempt from capital gains tax for UK residents.

Why Invest in Silver?

The physical silver investing market has been growing for several decades. Investing in gold became popular in the 1970s with the launch of the gold Krugerrand coin, and silver followed shortly thereafter. In the 1980s, a number of governments began to issue their own silver coins. Furthermore, some of the private banks such as Credit Suisse and UBS began to issue silver bars with their logos on them for their own client base.

Silver’s popularity can be traced to concerns over inflation and interest in the United States. Today, the investment silver market continues to grow. In addition to concerns over inflation, silver is deemed critical for a number of industries. These include medical equipment, green energy (including solar panels), and technologies such as smart phones and computers. The increasing demand for silver makes the metal a viable investment for those who believe that this demand will result in a price increase. Many investors believe that silver is currently undervalued, and the price should be higher.
